Proper kitchen utensils can make or break a meal…or pot and pan.  Specially designed pots and pans with a nonstick finish require kitchen utensils that are made of non metal materials.  A great option is bamboo.  Bamboo kitchen utensils come in many shapes in sizes ranging from stirring spoons to tongs.  Bamboo products are a good green option since they are made from all natural materials that are easily renewable.

Bamboo is a grass that is commonly associated with panda bears.  This evergreen grass matures quickly and is comprised of versatile wood-like components.  Bamboo is the fastest growing woody plant with all species having the potential to reach full grown within 3 to 4 months. Farrelly, David (1984), documented in his book, The Book of Bamboo, that bamboo has been measured growing as fast as 121 cm in only 24 hours.  There is no branching in the first year of growth.  Bamboo is ready for harvest for construction materials between 3 to 7 years.  A bamboo plant typically reaches the end of its lifecycle in 8 years due to fungus and mold that grow on it. This makes bamboo an environmentally sound alternative to using wooden utensils like cherry and oak that can take over 100 years to mature.

Bamboo is ideal for kitchen utensils because it does not absorb odors. It is stronger than wood.  My wooden spoons have splits and cracks that occurred over just months of use.  In contrast, bamboo kitchen utensils are smooth and have a satiny finish.  Traditional wooden spoons, spatulas, and other wooden kitchen utensils often develop a rough surface, swelling, and splintering.  The completely organic bamboo products I own have withstood 3 years of cooking in tropical and semitropical climates.  And although the tips of the spoons may be a bit browner than when I bought them, the surfaces are still completely smooth with no splits or splintering.  My nonstick pans do not have any scratches in them.

Bamboo is heat and stain resistant.  It is water resistant and does not swell or shrink, and it bamboo kitchen utensils are dishwasher safe.  Bamboo cooking utensils are durable and stronger than wood.  The bamboo kitchen utensils are often browned in an oven which caramelizes the plant’s natural sugars and gives the material a beautiful honey color.  Bamboo utensils are strong, durable, and flexible and completely dye and chemical free.

Kitchen utensils made if bamboo are cost-effective, environmentally safe choices for consumers.  They are an excellent 100% organic option when looking for new kitchen utensils.  They make eco-friendly gifts for showers, weddings, and housewarmings.  Bamboo kitchen utensils are the perfect alternative to plastic, silicone, and wooden utensils.  They come in several different shapes and sizes and can be bought in sets with decorative holders.

K9keystrokes - bamboo's smooth look and delightful honey color look great in the kitchen too, as well as being a sound investment.

Great hub. I have a couple of bamboo rice paddles but didn't know that bamboo was stronger than wood. That's good to learn and a good reason to replace my wooden spoons with bamboo as they wear out. Thanks for posting!
